I had the same problem when I moved in my home. My mother in law placed lavender scented moth balls all around my basement and it did the trick. Also, they sell these things that you can place in you air ducts that smell really good like cinnimon and other flavors.
Good Luck I hate that smell

You need the air ducts cleaned. Mildew can cause your family to get sick. There is a mildew prevention product you get from the hardware store. Its white and absorbs the moisture. You may need to use that after the cleaning.

Throw out all papers/books with mildew smell, and just about everything else you don't need. Could be a result of toxic mold. Sanitize floors, walls with bleach solution or ammonia to kill whatever is there. Clean AC ducts. After smell disappears, redecorate. If it does not, call Orkin ? (Bug on outta there)

The best product you can use is call : Odo Ban, you can find it at Sam's it cost about $10.00/gallon is the best solution to treat the mold and mildew and to prevent it come back. It's very important that you follow the instructions on the label, otherwise will not work. I used to sanitize Laboratories at Universities. This product is 5 in 1 It is a deodorizer, disinfectant, mildewstat, and a virucidal. it is safe to use on any surface.

We use a dehumidifier in the basement and also bought some Fresh Scent Bags (Clean Linen) and placed them in the furnish. It works great. Dryer Sheets will also work.

You need a special cleaner with bleach or some type of mold killing cleaner to destroy the mold. It can and will make you sick.
