I think that the guy doesnt want to be left. So in the event that you are considering leaving, he isnt alone. We dont want to be alone. I think that the thing you have to do is reassure him that you arent going anywhere.

Sugar I really doubt his backup is about fear. Backup is usually more a choice of lifestyle and indicator that he isn't ready to commit. I wouldn't feed his ego but rather let him know I want more.

There are many area's that some are very insecure when put in certain situations. Not because they are weak but because they can not control everything that happens in all situation. Now as he grows and mature when it comes to these things he may become more secure in how he function . That is why the saying is you never stop growing up and you never stop learning.

the greatest fear of us all is abandonment maybe he fears that from you and that is why he has a "backup"
