The historical significance of this book is in the fact that not only does it fairly accurately describe common thoughts and attitudes towards people of other races in the south at the time the story takes place, but it takes a stand on the issue. This book was released in 1962 and ideas towards racism have advanced a lot since then. Harper Lee was born in Alabama, and being caucasian, and a woman, I think it was pretty monumental for her to have been so forthright at the time. This was quite controversial for it's time.

Ditty Jeremy M. It shows the reality of the time period (I believe it was the thirties), and it shows how skewed these beliefs really were. It showed that bigoted assumptions stood in the way of reason and logic. It also showed what it was like to be a tomboy in those days.

Kind of a simplistic answer, but that's the best that I can come up with.

It attacked the issues regarding lack of equal rights for under educated african americans. The emphasis was that of the daughter (who was white) who could understand the difference of right and wrong regarding the treatment of african americans. The story showed how racism is something that is taught to children. And given the proper circumstance racism could be irradicated if we use the proper approach.
