Rar files are compressed files like *.zip files. use WinRar to read/write them.

Compressing small files does not lead to any space saving. Infact the size of the compressed file may become larger than the actual file in case on small files. Typically large files are compressed [ as even a 10% compression on a 100 MB can mean a saving of about 10 MB].

Your .rar files are opening in winamp because you have set the file association so. Open WinRar, go to options and then set winrar as the default program to open .rar files. Alternatively open winamp, goto preferences and deselect winamp as the default program to open *.rar files.

*.rar files are a compressed file format that require a program such as WinRAR (www.winrar.com) to open them. They are similar in nature to the *.zip files that use WinZip just compressed with a different software. I believe that WinZip will open .rar files.
