Hello, I have an answer that takes a little patience, but it is healthier for you and the environment!
Go on line and type in key words:
Flies
Integrated Pest Manage or just I.P.M.
Beneficial insects
These will bring you to many web sites that sell little bugs that use their stinger parts to lay eggs into fly maggots (not to sting)
The bugs can be purchased and placed in the yard, when they hunt out the fly maggots for the purpose of reproduction they are far more efficient that you and I even if it takes a little longer off the STARTING LINE! I can highly recommend this clean environmentally safe(the bugs are native) way to cut down by 90% on the fly population. My job depends on this type of natural control, Luck,Bugsie.

There are many kinds of fly traps. One that is pretty gross, but works well is a jar such as a large Miracle Whip size that you tape a cone of paper into the mouth of. Snip a fly sized hole at the tip of the cone. Before taping on the cone - which is pointed into the jar -bait the trap with what ever the flies seem to be drawn to. UGH!
Put the bait (moist dog food? Dog s**t??) into the jar. Fill the jar 1/2 way up with a mix of water and a teaspoon of liquid detergent. The flies get into the jar by walking down the cone but they can not find their way out again. They will walk right into the soapy water and drown.
When the jar is full of gross dead flies and maggots, screw the lid on and throw away. Repeat.
You can also try fly paper if your area is not so dry as to dry it out too soon.
If you are being bothered while sitting on the porch or eating outside, and don't want to spry insecticide around, you might keep a spray bottle filled with a mild water and detergent solution nearby. Just spray them and they will either die or fly away. It seems flies don't like to be sprayed with liquid soap. The mild spray won't hurt much else. Take care. It is not necessary to use an insecticidal soap spray.
If you want to be modern, you can get an electric lantern/insect killer that zaps the insects that are attracted to the light. Personally I don't like to hear the pop when a bug is zapped, but you can try it.
If you want to zap by hand, there are the electronic zappers that look like tennis racquets. I think these are better indoors for mosquitos though. Flies are too quick most of the time.
There are also some incense burners that repel insects such as flies and mosquitos. Do you have those where you live? Personally I don't like the smell of it, but maybe you can try.

Fly swatters used like a tennis racquet will do the trick. Also go keep them from your table (outdoor picnic) put a drop of Tabasco in your plate at 3, 6, 9 and 12 oclock positions. Flies have sensitive eyes that can't go near your plate then. We learned that in the islands at an outdoor restaurant in Hope Town.

Get a role of fly tape to hang up. You can find it at almost any local growers co-op or feed store.
