With convicts the females have red on their bellies.

With the electric. yellows you tell by if they have the small white type dots on their back fin called egg spots it is a male. I'm not certain off the top of my head those are included in the group of fish that have egg spots, but this is what it would look like:

Ps: You really shouldn't have a mix of african and south american's in the same tank. You may have problems later - especially with the dempseys.

OK, here's the really real answers. have a look at the bottom fin closest to the tail of the fish.(the anal fin). its the one below the big fin at the back. in females (and this goes for all Seth American cyclids) its got a shape like a flame, like on a candle, and in males, its more pointed and not as rounded in shape. the males also tend to have one that extends past the bottom corner of the tail, while the females ends a little before that corner.

Usually they are bigger and also brighter.I used to breed mouth-brooders.
