A chronic or recurrent UTI should be treated thoroughly because of the chance of kidney infection. Antibiotics may need to be given for a long period of time (as long as 6 months to 2 years), or stronger antibiotics may be needed than for single, uncomplicated episodes of cystitis. Use of low-dose antibiotics on a daily basis may be recommended to prevent UTIs if you get frequent infections. Drink plenty of water and other liquids each day. This helps ensure that you urinate frequently, which flushes bacteria from your urinary tract.
Urinate when you have the urge; don't hold your urine for a long time.
Avoid constipation.
Some people believe that drinking cranberry juice or taking vitamin C prevents urinary tract infections.
Urinate immediately after sexual intercourse. This is the best protection women have against UTIs, because it helps prevent the introduction of bacteria into the urethra.
Avoid using a diaphragm or condoms coated with spermicide for birth control if your doctor believes they are causing you to develop UTIs.
Change sanitary napkins often.
Avoid douches, feminine hygiene sprays, and other feminine hygiene products with deodorant. These can alter the normal balance of organisms that help prevent infection.

I suffered from these infections for many years. Never found out why although sex was definitely making it worse. I've finally found a cure: I take one antibiotic pill a day and it keeps the infections away. I wish I had done this years ago.

Urinary tract infections are usually not transferred from partner to partner. Recurrent infections may be due to inadequate antibiotics, sexual activity, improper hygeine-wiping improperly back to front.

Maybe you started to be sexually active recently? I used to have that problem and the doctor prescribed one pill of antibiotic after intercourse and the UTIs stopped. Always pee after intercourse.
