Headgear is this BIG metal thing that goes outside of your head and then hooks into braces... trust me I had them

Your teeth will be tender for a couple days after the braces go on, and every time they are tightened. This happens because they are moving your teeth to the proper positions and your gums and bone object to the movement.
A headgear is an appliance worn OUTSIDE the mouth, usually around the back of the neck or sometimes like a small hat that connects to the braces with rubber bands. A headgear adds torque and tension in ways not possible otherwise. Most of the time, a headgear is worn at night, but you can usually get it off early if you wear it all the time.

Braces SUCK! But the worst part is the Spacers that you get before the braces. The spacers are small, thick bands either metal or rubber, that go between your molars so that it's easier and less painfull to put the bands that the wires hook to, around your molars. The pain from the braces that you get is just a tightness, from your teeth being moved, and you can get mouth sores, but they give you a soft wax to put over the braces to keep them from touching the inside of your mouth...it helps immencely. And head gear is this big metal thing that goes on your teeth, and comes out of your mouth and wraps around your head. But any pain that you may get (aside from mouth sores), can be taken care of by either swishing warm, salt water around in your mouth for a while, or taking a Migrain pain killer, like Excedrin Migrain (that works best), but always make sure you eat something before you take the meds!

Do they still make headgear?
I had both and yes, it hurts, then it's uncomfortable and sometimes painful. Head gear is where they attach bands to your back top teeth and then a wire attaches to that and sticks out of your mouth and connects to a strap that goes around your neck. It's to correct overbites. If you sleep on your side, it will be impossible with that.
Best of luck and stay with it and wear the retainer when you're done, otherwise, you'll go through all that and have crocked teeth when your 30, like me.

No it doesn't hurt. It just makes your mouth sore for the first two to three days. Afterwards you don't feel a thing. And the way my orth said the headgear was, it was for if you had an overbite or underbite i can't remmeber. But you wear it when you go to sleep, but only if you get at least eight hours of sleep.

nah it doesnt really hurt too much if you have braces, only when you get them tightened. but sometimes some tightenings can really ache. headgear is what you wear if you have an overbite and you put it on at night to fix your teeth up. worst part of braces is probably when you eat and food gets up in between them and its real irritating to try and get that food up out of there.

Your teeth are sore right after you get them. After that they don't hurt unless they tighten them. Doesn't hurt much really. head gear is like a sling thing that you wer at home to make the teeth move faster. It has a strip that goes around your head and fastenes temporarily to the braces. Good luck to you and your new smile!

Braces hurt after you first get them put in for about a day and then when you go to get the rubberbands put in, they may hurt for a few minutes, but overall they are worth it!
