First of all smoke smell will be difficult but not impossible!
1. wash everything! Including your clothes hanging in the closet.
wash the curtains and bedding.
2. you will need to shampoo the carpets well. going over then a
couple of times should do it with a Good cleaner.
3. Painting isn't all that necc. If you want too they will look good.
Be sure to change all the aircondishing filters.
4. VERY IMPORTANT you will be surprised about how your
will smell if you BOIL VANILLA on the stove. YES cooking
vanilla. I am a smoker and when I want to clear the smoke out
of the air I boil a couple of medium size generic cooking
vanilla diluted about 1/2 way with water on med high on the
stove. I will do this until I can go outside and come back in
and the bad smell is gone. Be sure to add water about every
20-30 min. If you are not watching it the pan can burn. Trust
me you will be surprised.

Febreeze and open windows as weather permits. Laundering all the clothes in all of your closets, cleaning the carpets, painting the walls, (yes the walls have absorbed the evil stench as well.) It is worth it.
Most important thing to do is to be Rock Solid in you commitment to NEVER go back to that insidiously evil addiction. It will try to sneak up on you as you go along. You might go a few months or even a year and something will trigger an emotion or a memory and you will feel that old urge. I always fought it by just taking several deep breaths and being glad that I was able to do so. After a while the occurrence of those promptings will lessen.
I am approaching three years of freedom--it gets better all the time.

Try febreze air and fabric spray. Just spray it once a day, eventually the smell will go away. I know it hot and summer but if you can open windows and doors about an hour a day that will help to.
If your apt. is carpeted you could use a carpet cleaner as well.
Congrats on quitting and good luck!

Well congrats on quitting...now you want to clean everything to get it that nice smell. well first off clean the carpet wash the curtains, wash all of your clothing every piece. Possibly paint the walls, and clean your furniture, light a scented candle in every room. Open your windows, change you AC filter. There you should be all set. Now enjoy the non smoking life its cheaper too. You'll enjoy food better too. Good Luck. ?)

I restored some apts a few years ago that smelled really bad from cigarette smoke!!! and the walls were stained, we cleaned all the walls with a cleaner from Home Depot, and then painted with alcohol based paint made by "KILLZ" and replaced the carpet, the smell was GONE!
Good luck!

Go to Target and get a Holmes air filter - they have models that start around $25, and it cleans the air in 2 ways. It works great. Move it around the home and keep it on all the time. Target.com doesn't have a great selection, so going to a store in person is best. A second choice is walmart, but prices on air filters, believe it or not, aren't as good there.

Have the furniture and carpets cleaned, then wash all linens and bedding's. You should also wash the walls and ceilings with a pine sol solution, but you may have to paint.
You will also need to wash all your clothes too.
Your smell comes back after you've been quit for a while, so you will be hyper-sensitive to the smell for a while.
Best of luck to you...you can do it!!

Well, unfortunatly, it has been an ash tray, so you have to clean it from top to bottom. There are also some wick type oder removers that work in some situations. You might try those.

My wife and I quit smoking only in the house. Took it out on the patio. We then washed the walls and ceilings in all the rooms,(Took us three days.) The effect was almost immediate. No more ashtray smell.

Air it out as much as possible. Keep Windows open so a breeze blows through. I forget the name but a lot of deodorizers will help neutralize the smell. AND most of all congratulations
