Well...you can use a simple method, or you can do it accurately. The simple method is to subtract 2 weeks from the first day of your next period. It will be *wrong* for most women, but it will give you an estimate. All the ovulation Web sites work this same way--giving an estimate that will be wrong (but maybe "close enough") for most women.
Women generally ovulate 12-16 days before the first day of the next period. If you want to know precisely when you *have* ovulated, you can use the basal body temperature (BBT) method. Take your temperature every morning before you get out of bed or do *anything* (even talk on the phone). Chart the numbers you get on a piece of graph paper. When the temperature is several tenths of a degree higher than the last several, you have ovulated.
Some people are going to recommend "ovulation predictor kits". They are less accurate than what I suggest:
If you want to *really* be accurate, read the book, _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler. It is very detailed, but it is *not* difficult to follow. It will give you as precise an answer as you can get without having repeated ultrasounds every 6 hours for a week.
Another consideration is that your husband should quit smoking *now* if you want to conceive in 2-3 months. It takes up to 72 days for his body to manufacture individual sperm. Sperm for the next 2 1/2 months will have been produced during the time he was smoking--even if he quits cold turkey tomorrow!! Even so, he should quit so that you aren't exposed to second-hand smoke while pregnant.

First, make sure you are taking your prenatal vitamins already. You want to get that folic acid into your system before you are pregnant, you can get them over the counter.
Next, go to the pharmacy and buy a 21 day ovulation kit and a two pack pregnancy test. You begin the ovulation kit the day after your period ends. Basically its a stick you pee on each afternoon for 21 days. Usually somewhere around the 9th stick you will get a positive result. That will mean that you are going to begin ovulating. You should get a positive result for about 4 days or so because your LH surges. When you get the positive test, it's time to start trying to make a baby.
Good luck, this was what worked for me. It was a good thing I used it because I was ovulating a few days BEFORE most woman and was missing my peak fertilization time each month.
PS, DO NOT drink while doing this test. If you are serious about having a baby, stop the drinking the day your period ends and begin thinking of and treating yourself as pregnant. You also should totally ditch the smokes...either cold turkey or via laser or hypnosis. Don't use the patch while trying to get preggos, okay, it's really no good, you should use it before you are trying. Most women find cigarettes turn them off during pregnancy anyway, but don't take a chance, if you are planning to have a baby, ditch the bad habits now for the baby's sake.
Good luck and be good to yourself and that baby you want to make!

Everyone is different...If you have longer cycles then you probably ovulate a little later in your cycle....The best advice I can give you is to get a fertility monitor or ovulation strips.....this will give you a better insight to when you ovulate instead of trying to figure it out by your last period.....I use the clear blue easy fertility monitor and its wonderful....it pinpoints the exact days when you are most fertile.....If you cant do that then I would suggest to start having sex on day 10 (counting from the first day of your last period to around day 18, every other day.....If you still have no luck after a while I would consult my OB/GYN to make sure all is well...Good Luck!

Buy an ovulation detector at the grocery store or drug store. They are in the family planning aisle with the condoms and pregnancy tests.
I'm slightly confused by this question. Are you trying to get pregnant or trying to not get pregnant? If you are trying to get pregnant, then stop smoking and drinking, then get on prenatal vitamins! Smoking and alcohol can damage the baby's brain and health severely.
If you are trying not to get pregnant, then buy some condoms. You can get pregnant anytime, not just during ovulation, because that date can vary each month! And sperm can live inside of you for 3 days, so you could get pregnant if you have sex 3 days before you ovulate.

Generally ovulation occurs days 12-15 after the first day of your period. This is an old standard rule of thumb. You can purchase the ovulation kits that are on the market for closer results.

Ovulation tests are probably the simplest way. Just purchase one...it comes with complete instructions. When you see a positive result on the test...it means you will ovulate in 24 to 36 hours.

try this website....if your cycles are regular.Put in the date of when you last started a period. Enter how long is your cycle ( 1st day of bleeding, till the first day of next period) If you dont know, your gonna have to start writing it down from now on for the next two cycles...then count on the calender. After you enter the info click calculate and it will tell you when you are fertile.... The next best thing I can suggest is get the Ovulite microscope. Its $30 and lasts forever.. Measures hormones in your saliva and lets you know when you will be ovulating

Are your cycles regular?? If they are then count 14 days from the first day of you last period.. For example, if your period Starts on May 1st, then you would most likely ovulate on the 14th, give or take a couple of days. This only works if you are regular. It will take you several cycle to get familiar with it. Check out these websites

I know the best site for that. All you do is put in your period info (like the length and how many days it last) and it calculates when you will be fertile and ovulating.
It has worked for so many i know. Good Luck to you!!!

Go to www. babyzone.com they have an ovulation calender. You enter the dates of your last period and it keeps track of you ovulation times, your most fertile day, and when your period is expected to start. Plus it has some interesting info.
