i have to write my final paper on this topic. its pretty broad, so if anyone has any idea on what direction i could take it, that would be appreciated!

Focus on the concept of communication because communication is what writing's all about.

You may want to Research some of the Different Forms of Writing, History and Symbols used. I would come from the approach of it being a way to Communicate Language in Symbol Form. Good Luck.

Wow! That IS pretty broad... Well, personally, I would take it in this direction:
Writing was, and is, a form of communication. It enables us to speak when we cannot, keep records of thoughts and/or feelings, and express ourselves.

writing? as in nonsense lines universal accepted as representing letters the make up words so that we can document ideas, feelings, etc along with the past? cause thats what they are. an a is only an a if you agree that that is how it should look.
