First accept it.
A gift is a present and is given to you, right? It is like the gift in you as to your ability.
I do not know the full story, if you have a choice or it part of a will or agreement.
Do you have stipulation attached to it?

Once you accept it and if you do contact the city and get a history on it. It easy to say rent or sell but you first need to know what you have.

Once you know what you have it will help you to make the best choice: You can sell, rent, personally or using real estate agents, will it, or give it to charity, etc.

I had same experience with a house and did not know that along with my gift I had to pay $7,000 immediately or loose it and to sell it I will have to pay $30,000. So take it from me, it my sound easy just to say sell, rent etc, but count the cost before you accept it if you are given that choice.
In my case it was not as easy as it sounds. If you want to share more feel free to email.

How do you give someone an apartment as a gift? Seriously, who wants the gift that keeps on giving? And by keeps on giving, I mean having to pay the rent. FUN.

By "give" i'm assuming you mean they bought the apartment and then gave it away to me. I'd probably keep it and see if i liked living in Manhattan. If i did, i'd probably relocate there. No rent to pay, i probably wouldn't need my car in NYC, so i'm out food and utilities. Even as expensive as NYC is to live in, surely i could swing that.

Since I never have any money, I'd probably sell it. I know that is not very original, but it's the truth. I'd love to be able to use it for like a vacation home or something, but wouldn't be able to afford that either. Or maybe I could use it as a time share property.

If I actually get a scholar ship to the US, I might keep that apartment so that I can live there. It not, I'll definitely sell it.
