Romeo and Juliet. Nice. I prefer the Merchant of Venice:

"I hold the world but as the world, a stage, where every man must play a part, and mine, a sad one."

Oh I thought you meant a name of a person. SO here I go....

A name is something which, at least in the USA, you must have before you are dismissed from the hospital/birthing center so they can file it with the department of health so you can get a social security card so some day, if you are extremely fortunate and the baby boomers haven't spent it all, you will be entitled to benefits under. If you aren't born in an institution, you don't have to do all of the above.

The person who "chooses" your name should be of sound mind. It is the characteristic you shall use all of your life. It is subject to change, usually by choice. You can have it legally changed for a price. You also can change it to the last name of your spouse if you wish, or you can hyphenate it. Either way, it is still your name.

In each individual name, there are (usually) three parts. The first name is most often how you are addressed in both oral and written communication. Sometimes the second name (or middle name) is used, sometimes both first and middle. The last name is the name of the MOTHER on the birth certificate if she choses to do that. THe person filling out the birth certificate (and it can be ANYONE!!!) can put whatever name they want in the boxes for name of the child. The thing they should NOT do is put down an incorrect MOTHER or FATHER in those blanks. Causes a bunch of problems - legally as well as socially.

ANyway, the "name" given to a person can certainly affect their outlook in life. If they hate their name, they may blame their birth parents or adoptive parents for such a horrible thing. If they have a distinguished name (whatever that might be) they may lean more toward intellectualism. If they are "named after" someone, it may be a very proud fact. What you were called when you were born and how you use your "name" can influence your future in small and big ways.
