If you really want to play the guitar, just keep at it and don't quit. It helps to have friends that play as it makes practicing a whole lot more fun than lockin yourself up in your bedroom and you can always learn stuff from other people. Good Luck!

Do you take private lessons? If not, that is THE most effective way to improve. If you're self-taught, you can only learn so much. It takes another musician to listen to you, watch your technique, etc and give you feedback. Regular lessons will help you improve.
Also, how often, and how much, do you practice? Be honest. DAILY practice is ESSENTIAL to ALL musicians! Our art will never get better unless we practice every day. I read a quote once that said, "if I don't practice today, I know it. If I don't practice tomorrow, the world knows it." There's a lot of truth to that. You don't have to practice 8 hours a day, but if you practice at least 30 minutes daily--more preferably an hour or more--you will see improvement.
When you practice...what are your practice sessions like? Do you just kinda diddle around, and randomly work on bits on pieces? Do you sit down to play without any game plan on what your're going to work on?
I recommend that you keep a practice diary. Before each practice session, write down EXACTLY what you're going to work on in that session. It's a good idea to practice more than one thing to mix it up and keep it interesting. Work on scales and chords daily. Also get a good study book with etudes/studies for guitar. These will all help technique.
Practice with a metronome. If you don't have one buy one. Never practice without it. ALWAYS turn it on! It will help with tempo and rhythm.
Also, make goals for yourself. What do you want as a guitar player? Whether you want to be in a band, want to be a classical guitarist, want to get good enough to teach guitar, or maybe just learn guitar for fun, find out what you want from your music. Then make goals to get there. When you write it down, it makes it real.
I really hope some of this helps. Please e-mail me at saisaxgirl@yahoo.com if you'd like any more tips!

Get some tabs of some simple songs and learn to play them slowly over and over again so that you can play them well. Then you can start trying more advanced songs, but not too much more advanced. It takes a long time to become a good guitarist and a lot of practice. I've been playing for over 25 years in my spare time and a lot of people think I'm a "good guitarist" but I know that I'm just OK when compared to people who are truly gifted musically.

Don't give up like I did. You might not be as bad as you think, so have patience. Don't expect to sound like Jimi Hendrix the second or third day. Also, make sure your nails are cut and your strings aren't too hard to press down on. If they are, get a lower grade of string.

Listen to music with a lot of good guitar parts and try to play them. I suggest System of a Down or Colplay.

take lessons. learn to play your favorite songs. practice at least an hour a day. Start writing your own stuff. You'll realize that improvising forces you to develop technique quickly because your brain has an idea that your fingers can't play but try to anyway.
