It's totally up to the judge. Give a good reason and don't push it, you can lose your case for no shows.

In some states you can get 3 continues..but after that the case can be dismissed.That's even true in criminal cases in some states.

You can ask for them, but whether you get them or not will depend on the judge. A lot will depend on what reason you give for asking for them. If it's just not convenient a time, you won't get it. If you are gathering evidence, you'll usually get at least one, maybe two.
