Let X and Y be the two numbers,

XY = -45 ... (1)

X+Y = -12 ... (2)

Substitute (2) into (1)

X (-X -12) = -45

-X^2 - 12X = -45

X^2 +12X-45 =0

Factorize,

(X - 3)(X + 15) =0

X = 3 or X = -15

When X = 3, Y = -15
When X = -15, Y = 3

The two numbers are 3 and -15.

hmm ..
x+y = -12
x = -12 -y
..........
x*y = -45

(-12-y) * y = -45
-y^2 - 12y + 45 = 0

(y + 15)* (y - 3) = 0

y= -15 or y = 3 ...

check the answer ... guess it would be
-15 and +3

xy = -45
x + y = -12

x + y = -12
y = -x - 12

xy = -45
x(-x - 12) = -45
x(-(x + 12)) = -45
-x(x + 12) = -45
x(x + 12) = 45
x^2 + 12x = 45
x^2 + 12x - 45 = 0
(x - 3)(x + 15) = 0
x = 3 and -15
