My mother did all of our sewing, but she died last year, and - so far - I haven't even been able to thread a needle. She tried to teach me one time, but I didn't pay attention.

It's very simple. After you thread the needle, you need to remember to make a knot at the end of the string and then start sewing the button threw all holes. When you think it is secure enough, sew the needle between the strings (that you just sewed) and the fabric to keep it from unraveling, but do it from different directions - It's like you're knotting it again. Cut and your done!

The main thing in threading a needle is to get the frayed ends of the thread in that tiny hole, right?
After cutting a couple feet of thread (you may not need it all), suck on one end of it and it will go into the eye easily--unless you're not wearing your glasses as your optometrist prescirbed.
Double the thread. Tie a knot in the ends by first wetting thumb and forefinger, then wiggle those ends into a tizzy, pull gently...there 'tis.
Stores don't do this: go in and out, back and forth in those button holes until you can't get anymore thread through.
