Just tell him that your friendship with him is too important to you to risk messing it up with a romantic relationship. You can use my story as an example if you want.
You see, I had (see the operative word here, had) a best guy friend and we decided to start dating. We eventually ended our romantic relationship (on good terms) and tried to go forward with the friendship but it was very awkward. We lost the closeness we had as friends and that hurt more than breaking up with him did.

No matter what is going to hurt he's feelings. Why don't your try looking at him in another way. Then see how you feel. Your best friends are a lot of times the one.

There's no way to tell him without hurting his feelings. The best you can do is offer to still be friends and not let it affect the friendship.

Just be completely honest with him. Be gentle and kind to him, there is no easy way to break the news.

BEFORE MAKING THAT DECISION, LOOK INSIDE YOURSELF TO SEE WHAT IS IT THAT YOU COULD FALL IN LOVE WITH HIM OVER. IF YOU FIND NOTHING THEN MAKE SURE YOU STILL KEEP YOUR FRIEND.
