I went out today to see a baby fawn with my dog. The dog was just standing, watching over it in a motherly way, but I put my dog in and left the deer alone, hoping that the mother would come back for it. I haven't disturbed it all day, but the mother hasn't come back yet. The sun is setting and it's getting cold outside. I'm afraid that it will either freeze to death or starve. Should I take it in and feed it some milk replacement? I have lamb milk replacement. I know the best thing would be for the mother to come back and get it, but I don't know if anyone will come back for it. It's been almost seven hours and it's getting cold outside. What should I do?

You need to call your local animal control or wildlife forestry people to come and get the fawn. If you can't find their number then call the police and they will help you get ahold of someone. Good luck.

LEAVE IT ALONE! The mother will come back for it. They dont stay with their young all the time because it could attract predators, that is why the fawns have spots ( for camoflauge)
Also your so worried about it getting cold...do you think its mother has a heater for it ? What on earth do you think it does outside?? lol its a wild animal! Deer are very active towards dusk and dawn and at night, it will come back for it unless she was hit but the fawn will be able to fend for itself...they eat grass within a few hours of birth so its not going to starve either

That is so precious!! Yes you need to bring it in and keep it warm and feed it. The mother would have been back for it by now. She may have tried and was afraid of the dog? At any rate, be sure that you can raise this fawn and possibly keep it indefinitely, because once it smells of human contact, the mother will not take it back. Who knows? The mother could have got hit by a car or poached or anything. The fawn will not be able to survive alone because it will not have nature training from others of its kind. So you may have to adopt the little darling! :) Go get it and bring it in now. Good luck!

Just leave the fawn there until morning, the Mother might have sense you and your dog out there, and decided to come for it later on. But if the Mother has'nt returned by then which may be caused by an untiming death, then just call the Animal Society or a animal shelter. But do not touch or handle the fawn because it can turn on you or die.

Don't touch it. Leave it alone and don't worry about it getting cold, It will not get cold enough to harm it. Doe deer leave there fawns for many hours at a time. The reason for this is the fawns have no natural scent when they are small there for the Doe stays away from its young so its own scent does not attract predaters. I f you leave it alone it will be gone by morning, The doe will come back to get it. Once you feed it you will be stuck taking care of it because the doe will abandon it.

Knowing me.. I wouldnt be able to leave a poor innocent animal outside.. So, I would most likely take it in. Although.. Im not sure how the mother would react if she found the fawn.. with a human scent on it.. Be careful with what you decide to do. Maybe you should call animal control and get some advice from them!

The same thing happened to my dad. DO NOT call the wildlife department all they will say is let it die. Do not give it lamb milk replacer horse milk is better for it. If you decide to take it it will need milk every 2 hours even at midnight!!!!! When you take it outside put it on a leash and let it sleep inside no matter what just take it out once and awhile.

Well, if you don't mind having a flower eating machine on your property, why not. It is not good to mess with nature even if it mean it starves to death. It is natures way of taking care of itself, you will learn this also in life eventually. But if you don't see the mother anywhere around it may because it got hit by a car somewhere or the baby is sick. Be careful. Do whatever your conscience tell you to do, its called intuition and always take heed to its warnings and meanings.

Contact your local animal control department, Game and Fish or Dept of Natural Resources division.... whichever is appropriate.

They need to come and take the fawn in.
