they are cute because it's fun. We can pretend we are hitting some poor and colorful animal and get some candy as a reward for hurting innocent animals.
It wouldn't be funny if you hit a real animal with a stick and get a lot of blood and nasty things as a reward.
so
we hit pinatas - we don't hit animals
see the little difference?

Why would i not be surprised to find this question from an American parent!!!???? Bothered it is a fun thing to do for kids at parties. Instead of worrying about that you should teach kids manners and respect for things they own. Maybe that way they wouldn't throw a hissy fit everytime they demmand something they can't have!
Kids don't go home from a party and go and hit a real donkey with a baseball bat then ask for a treat!

It is not encouraging physical violence! I am Hispanic and all family's birthdays we celebrate with a pinata! It's been an Hispanic custom for years! Besides if someone wanted to to physical harm on someone they wouldn't want to be BLIND Folded would they?

I know it has to do w/ culture,,but if it bothers you,,, You can always look at it this way:
You have to work for what you get... it is kinda hard for little ones to pick up a stick and hit that thing , while trying not to fall down.
It is a fun piece of decoration and a treat for the kids,,,not to mention that it uses up some time.

Well in a way we are, but because its a Mexican tradition, its been like that for ages.
Also its just a game, right? The kids don't do it everyday and they enjoy having a challenge of hitting it directly to break it.
In a way, I guess it helps your hand eye coordination~
I think they're cute because they are fun to look at because they can come in like anything and the kids are adorable when they try SO hard to break it. ^^

Its part of latin culture. We can not change other people ehtnicities because we disagree with what they believe in. Maybe it is to ward off evil spirits. It is of the latin culture, maybe ask someone who is spanish or mexican
