Induction of labor is done with a medicine called Pitocin. It's given IV and will make your body begin labor. I was induced with my last child under very similar circumstances. There are many different opinions about this- some ppl feel that it's best to let nature "do it's thing" but, you have to remember that years ago death of baby and/or mother in childbirth was very common because of the lack of medical knowledge. I think that it's better to be safe than sorry! Science still doesn't actually know what triggers a person to start producing Oxytocin ( the chemical our brains produce that make the uterus contract- Pitocin is the man made version of Oxytocin ) If your unborn baby is too past due, serious issues can arise- including devastating birth defects. Trust your MD- being induced isn't that bad and just think in 1 more week you will holding your sweet new baby! Good Luck!!!

By the way- it does NOT hurt when they break your membranes- it's done with a little hook and DOES NOT HURT!

If your doctor thinks you should be induced, she will certainly bring it up with you at your appointment. You likely won't need to ask.

There aren't that many ways to do it.

They can insert a prostaglandin gel into your cervix. (They can actually do that multiple times. It softens you up and is supposed to start labor, but sometimes doesn't work on the first go.) They can break your water. Or they can give you IV pitocin. Or they can do all of those things.

They won't do any of them in the doctor's office. You'll have to go to the hospital. And they probably won't do it at your appointment. They usually do it really, really early in the morning, so if she says, "Go," they'll mostly schedule you for 5:30 or so the next day.

And here's my $0.02: trust your doctor, obviously. If she says you need to be induced, then you probably do. But if some of this is about convenience, or about you really, really wanting to be done, I'd recommend holding out.

I was induced during my first pregnancy at 37 weeks due to preeclampsia. And it sucked. 52 hours of labor, 3 hours of pushing, and I still ended up with an emergency C-section. If I could have waited, I would have.

Yes ask your doctor when she's going to do it, though I am sure she'll bring it up herself as well. There are quite a number of ways to induce but not all docs use all the way possible, like breaking your water or injecting Progestin which can start contractions. Good luck have fun with the baby!

When a doctor induces labor, they break your water. I have been told that it's actually quite painful, because they go in and take a little tool, like a scalpula, and run it around the opening of the cervix to break your water. When you go to your doctor's appointment, ask her what she's planning on doing. There are many ways, they can also give you medication that start your contractions.

If you are dilated somewhat, they may "strip your membranes" which is basically running a finger around the cervix to begin the process. Generally, you will be induced with oxytocin, the synthetic version of the hormone released from your pituitary gland when your breasts are stimulated (this causes uterine contractions). After you are dilated a few cm, your water will be broken with a hook in order to speed things up. If all of these things fail, and you aren't progressing, a c-section is often the outcome.

You'll be injected with synthetic forms of prostaglandins, but only if you meet the following criteria:

You're one to two weeks beyond your due date, and labor hasn't started naturally.

Your water has broken, but you're not having contractions.

There's an infection in your uterus.

Your baby has stopped growing at the expected pace.

There's not enough amniotic fluid surrounding the baby.

Your placenta has begun to deteriorate or separate from the wall of your uterus.

You have a medical condition that may put you or your baby at risk, such as high blood pressure or diabetes.

She will probably set up an appointment on Tuesday. When they induce labor, they give you an IV drip of patosin (sp) and let it give you labor pains to get the baby out. I had it done and had a great labor in less than 8 hours.

I was induced I was 42 weeks I was dilated to 4cm so they broke my water. I didn't start contractions so they then put a I.V. in and started patosian which makes you dilate. Good Luck And Best Wishes.

I was induced with my first child. They broke my water and gave me shots to soften my cervix. They had to do that three times. I was in labor for 48 hours. I don't mean to scare you but things can get complicated. Good luck!

I believe that to "induce" your labor, they will hook you up to a drip which will start the process of labor for you.

I have not had this done, but my Sister did. She said that it didn't hurt and she was quite relaxed. Basically it's like having an I.V. put into your arm.

CONGRATULATIONS on the birth of your child.
