You need a scan tool to retrieve codes on this vehicle. Auto Zone will do it for free. HTH!! Good Luck!!

I don't remeber if Jeep was owned by Chrysler in '88, or if AMC still had ownership, but on Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth vehicles, turning the ignition key from 'off' to 'on' three times in rapid sucession will cause the 'check engine' light to flash the code for you - three flashes follwed by a pause and five flashes would be code 35, etc. Give that a shot, if that doesn't work, go to an auto parts place, most of them will pull a 'check engine' code for free.

Not sure what ur after here, if your having problems with ur 88 tell us what it is, might be someone on here can steer u in the right direction. I have an 89 and a buddy has an 88.
