No!! They used to be though. When sanctions were put on Saddam the U.N. started to change and turned corrupt. I just wish that America would have stopped all money to the U.N. after we found out about their oil for food program. Their soldiers are raping around the world and they do nothing. When we find out that our military is killing or raping their is always an investigation. And if found guilty they serve time. The U.N. are always giving criminals free reign. Why can't we overhaul the mess?

The question has a difficult answer. First the answer depends on your definition of effectiveness. If we are addressing the functionioning of the bureacracy, then the answer is no. The UN, like any bureacracy, has grown to the extent that it suffers institutinal paralysis more times than not. However, if the question is overall than the answer is yes. Th UN has been instrumental in setting standards and laws that many countries abide by. It is a forum for countries to gather and negotiate. The Un has been instrumental in creating Human Right Laws, Law of the Sea and other laws that have prevented many of the outrages and aggressions that have plagued mankind. I read many of the answers that villified the UN for its lack of action. This really comes through the problems with the security council, where any country can veto the action of the whole froup. I do recognize that as a military apparatus the UN is not effective, at least in the role of peace making. For your report I would refer to the United Nations charter and and address the successes and opportunities. The number one success would be the establishement of interntional norms and standards. The opportunity would be to give "teeth" to some of its actions without infringing on the sovereignity of individual countries. Finally, to the statements that the "US rules the UN" shows a high level confusion. As one answerer pointed out, despite contributing 25% of the budget the US still has only one vote. A key indicator would be the Security Council where any one permananet member can prevent any military action or strongly worded resolution with a simple veto.

Is the UN an effective Organisation. As a military and Defense Org. the answer is no. The UN has only been involved in a few wars. Korean War (because the Soviets were boycotting the Meetings) and Iraq 1. The UN is security council is made up of many countries who disliked us-USSR (Now Russia), CHINA, and France (just for fun). The standing order for troops in the UN is not to interfere, so many times genocide has gone on in front of UN peace keepers, sad huh. As a humanitarian organization it is effective because it deploys food and other aid to many countries in need of help. Also in your report don't forget that out of every country in the world the United States is under Contract to give 25% of the UN budget. I have listed some scholorly work that might help. If you have access to Jstore I recomend that site. If not then I could recomend a few books but I don't know how much time you have to write this report. Plus they are college level and I am unsure of how much information you need.

Can anyone name a single significant achievement the United Nations has accomplished in the recent past ?
While there maybe little reason to believe the UN can help with the Iran, Korea, of China issues, one might expect the United Nations be capable of action to protect the slaughter of so many innocent people in Africa.

No. Because you cannot run this world with selfishness. The preachings and teachings of Jesus Christ are role models for establishing a 'SOCIETY WITHOUT SELFISHNESS'. God always fights on behalf of slaves and oppressed. The UN cannot dictate terms to anybody and hence it is a failure. UN should abolish all Governments and establish one common Government for the world with one common religion, one culture, and only langauge and provide equality and gurantee food, clothing and shelter to every earthizen. If u r able to start thinking about the welfare of others as u do it of yourself then all the problems of this univerrse will be wiped offf. The answer is Jesus. Please do something to establish this universal Society without selfishness or else all will be perished on 21-3-2026.

I can't recall anything positive accomplished by the U.N. The mess in Africa has been going on for years, then U.N. has done nothing. There have been catastrophies all over the world, and most recovery efforts have been carried out by charities or private organizations. They have peacekeeping forces areound the world, controlled by the U.N., but manned mostly by U.S. or British forces.
I wish I had something positive to say about the organization, but I don't.

No. But that could all change, if only its charter was reformed so that it had a treasury.
Without a treasury, the UN is a toothless dog, forced to sing for its supper and no effective clout.

The U.N. in totally ineffective. They did not stop Bush from his war of aggression, they did not stop the Serbs, they have not stop Israeli aggression. Seems to me they too are only in existence to help the elite and international corporations rob from the working man all over the globe. We do not need to be involved in the U.N., nor do we need to be a party of their labor agreements. Seems to me we have a good constitution, now if we were only able to get our elected Representatives to follow it, all would be good.

It was originally formed with the best of intentions, but today it is corrupt, ridiculous, and serves no valuable purpose in terms of peacekeeping. It should be disbanded, at least moved to another country where we don't have to look at it all the time.
