Laying asphalt is not exact. The contractor will aim for a uniform two inches for a driveway, but it can vary anywhere from 1 1/2" to 3" depending on the crown of the surface for shedding water, compensating for high and low spots in the gravel base, and tapering for transitions such as manholes, drainage grates and concrete curbs and aprons.
Overall, it should average about two inches, which is adequate for a residential driveway. Anymore than that, the contractor's profit margin starts to slip. Any less than that, it won't hold up very well and could affect the contractors proffesional reputation.
