Maybe I'm a hermit, but I really don't like it when people just show up to visit without calling me first to see if I'm busy. I am busy a lot, so maybe I'd never visit, but I like it that way! I have found this getting very irritating, but don't know whether I should just ignore it, or find a way to deal with it. I like to be prepared when people come over (clean up the house, baby proof for little children, close doors that I don't want people to go into, etc.). When people just show up, I am not relaxed, I worry about my stuff getting wrecked by kids, and I spend my time stressing about what I was supposed to be working on. So... opinions, anyone? I have no problem being social, but I prefer to do it on my own terms (and usually somewhere other than my house). HELP! I don't want to be rude, either.

That is a very good question. I always say to unexpected visitors that "I am in the middle of something important and I can't have company right now. And I wish you had called so that you would not have had to waste a trip. Sorry."

I am in total agreement with you. I have had people show up when I am taking a bath, or not dressed and just recently when
I was having a dinner party. I had 8 dinner guest and that is a lot
of work & planning. I wanted to enjoy it. Here comes my brother & his funky wife. They didn't have the good sense to just leave.
They sat on the sofa and watched us at dinner. I know how miserable {they were} because they always eat everything I have when they show up unanounced. I can't figure out what to do I have told them repeatedly to call first.

When people don't call me first, I refuse to answer my door. I have also answered the door and told people I was busy, and couldn't visit at the present time. Some have been offended, but that's their problem, not mine.

I understand you.I hate people who don't call first and i am too nice to just tell them to go away.Try not answering the door or when they come you put your jacket on and say to them something like:"oh sorry i didn't knew that you are coming, sorry but i have to go ...there..."
And just go.walk around for 10 min and go back. They will call you next time, trust me.
