You are right, there may be more than just sleeping together. The phrase is used so that the participants do not need to describe the details to the people who don't give a **** of what'd happened.

Having "slept together" has become just a 'smoother, sexier' way of saying that two people actually had sex. To blantantly say "we had sex last night" would be a little much for some people, especially for a public situation. However, to say 'I slept with her last night' is a much more toned down way of stating the matter, but people still get the idea.

Technically, no, it doesn't mean that anything sexual took place, but nowadays no one would dare using that phrase in a non-sexual situation without explaining themselves as merely "sleeping."

This is called a "euphemism."

It is done as a courtesy. There are some things better imagined than described.

The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48 [gcide]
Euphemism \Eu"phe*mism\ ([=u]"f[-e]*m[i^]z'm), n. [Gr. ? fr. ?
to use word of a good omen; e'y^ well + ? to speak: cf. F.
euph['e]misme. See Fame.] (Rhet.)
A figure in which a harsh or indelicate word or expression is
softened; a way of describing an offensive thing by an
inoffensive expression; a mild name for something
disagreeable.

Because even if you just slept with a guy, no one is going to believe you. They are just going to think you had sex because no one says make love anymore either. People say a lot of things in very inaccurate ways.

Major portion of night will be utilised for sleeping only. What more than just sleep cannot be more than an hour or so.(actual duration may be even less).More sleep is there..It is only a cultured way saying having sex.Nothing more than that

I guess slept is understood to mean Had Sex. If they only slept together and did not have sex....they get an added shock value.

Cause they suffer from selective memory loss and forget the bit before the sleeping :-)

Maybe it is just for polite conversation.. it would seem a little crass to say hey yeah I banged her last night.
I think it is an issue of class.

Because, unfortunately in our society when someone says that they Slept" with someone it is understood that they have had sexual relations with them. I guess that is because the American people think that if you "sleep" with someone then you are "doing it" with them.

Often thought about this phrase. In fact, sleeping is probably the only thing they didn't do.
