I have stayed at:
MGM Grand
Bellagio
Wynn
Luxor
Harrahs
Mandalay Bay
I suggest Harrahs for cheaper rooms with a great location. They have the monorail that stops right there and its located directly across from Ceasars and Bellagio.
Their casino is fun because you a lot of walkers from the strip that wander in there as well as the Dueling Piano Bar that is in the lobby area, loads and loads of fun.
I usually bring about $1000 for gambeling. I travel to Vegas every other week for business and every 3 months for a mini-vacation.

I have been to Vegas many time; going again in a few weeks. You will get a different answer from everyone on this based on their hotel experience. Here's my suggestion.
Stay on the strip in the center of all of the hotel locations so that you can walk to see all of the hotels and casinos, and all of the free attractions. The best place to stay to do that is in one of the hotels on or nearest to Flamingo Rd & the Strip. At that corner is Ceasers, Bellagios, the Flamingo, Ballys, and The Paris hotels.
The next thing to consider in picking the BEST place is price. Rates go down in the summer and again after Thanksgiving, until about mid-January (except new years eve when prices double). So pick a place that has the best price for you. Ceasers and Bellagios will cost top dollar (like $150 and up) during the summer. Flamingo, Ballys and some others you can get into for around $100, but most times for less, during the low seasons. I have stayed at Mandalay Bay, Excalibur, MGM, Monte Carlo, Bellagios, Ceasers, the Rio, the Flamingo, Ballys, and Harrahs. But the BEST place for me when I go is who has the best price. All of the Strip hotels are great. So shop the web places below, look at the hotel rate calendars and go when the price is the lowest. That's the best place to stay. Right now you should be able to geta room in a Strip hotel for less tha $100 a night, except Friday and Sat will be about $40 to $60 more.

We have always enjoyed staying at the southern end of the strip. We have stayed at MGM and New New york which are reasonably priced. Top of the line would be Bellagio. We spend about a $100 a day on gambling but it really depends on the person. A $100 dollars goes quick if you like to gamble. My wife I and I often take turns playing the same slot machine. This way we both have fun at half the cost and its always fun if you win together.
Food & Entertainment is expensive but there are still some great offers if you look off of the strip. There are several McDonalds and other fast food resturaunts available as well. If you want to do some shows I suggest you book them ahead of time since many sell out.
twototravel.com or travelfunjet.com may offer some great deals for you and I know travelfunjet.com will let you book shows and other excusions as well. If you choose totwotravel.com you may need to contact a travel specialist to book your excursions and shows.
Have a great time.

Las Vegas offers wide range of things to do and there are zillion things you can get involved.
You can either gamble in casinos, see the shows or just roam around in the strip. Depending on these and many other activities, your budget can be set.
Similarly there are lots of hotels - luxurious, expensive, cheap..any thing that suits your taste.Best thing is to stay in any hotel which is on the 'Strip', which is the main road in Las vegas.
I suggest if you know your travel plan in advance, then better book the hotel in advance, so that you get at reasonable price.

My girl and I just visited vegas and we booked air and hotel on Orbitz. We booked closer to our travel and lucked out with a great package for $1300for two people airfare and room for four nights. We spent $100 a day for food. Did not gamble and $200 for twoshows and other than that we hung out at the hotel without ever getting board. Oh yeah, the drinks are high ($8 margarita)
have fun!!!

MGM Grand is by far the best place to stay. You can get certain rooms for very decent rates...try rooms in the Emerald Tower. Also, you can do anything and everything in this hotel. Gamble, shop, drink, club, bars, GREAT swimming pools and lazy rivers, and tons of stuff for kids to do. I always go for four day weekends and take about $800 and that gives me more than enough to do what I want.

Depends on how much you want to spend on a room. Weekends are more expensive.
