After you stop dribbiling you have to either shoot the ball or pass it. But you can lift one foot (your left or your right) if you lift up your left foot (it really doesn't matter which one you use) then your right foot is your pivot foot. You can't change your pivot foot otherwise that would be a travel. The foot you lift up can be used to to turn your body around your pivot foot. You can not lift your pivot foot off the ground or change it after you have picked it. This is extremly hard to elpxain with words so go to this site http://en.mimi.hu/basketball/pivot_foot.html

The pivot foot is the foot that must maintain contact with the court as long as the player is in possession of the basketball. If a player has both feet on the court when he gets the ball, he may choose which foot is his pivot foot.

your pivot foot is the foot that you are not allowed to move while standing still in basketball. lets just say you are running with the ball, (and of course dribbling) and you have to stop. now both feet are on the ground. whichever foot you lift up first, the other one becomes your pivot foot. and you can move around in a circle, as long as that pivot foot doesnt move, and it stays in the center of the circle. if you move it, it is a travel.

Your pivot foot is when you are standing with the ball and you can't move or it will be traveling. Lets say that you want to say on your left foot and you foot stays in that spot. Then your right foot pushes you in circles and able to move around so your opponent is unable to get the ball.

That's your plant foot, meaning before you take a dribble, or when you catch a pass you can move only one foot. The foot that you don't move is your pivot. If you are stationary with the ball in your hand and are not dribbling, when you move your pivot or plant foot its called a walk.
