No, but, unfortunately, there aren't enough numbers of other parties to effectively change the government.
One almost has to side with one or the other, if they want to change anything at all.
To affiliate and align themselves with one of the lesser parties, at election times, is basically, no vote at all. Because the number of supporters isn't there, their candidates stand no chance of winning.
A lot of people vote for the lesser parties as a matter of principle, but the end result can be a person in office that reflects none of what they stand for.

No, but from reading most of these answers, I can see why someone would think that. There's a small percentage of Americans on the left-wing fringe (certainly a smaller percentage than what you see on Yahoo Answers), a small percentage on the right-wing fringe (again, smaller than what you see here), and most of us are somewhere in between.

Personally, I'm neither a full-blooded liberal or conservative. Overall, I tend toward the right of center, but I agree with the liberal position on some questions. Not nearly enough to make me seriously consider voting for any of the current crop of Democrats though. Now, if they came up with some ideas of their own instead of whining, yelling, and Bush-bashing so much...

Of course not. I myself am a Libertarian and vote Libertarian on most issues.

I have to take issue with this comment though.

"A lot of people vote for the lesser parties as a matter of principle, but the end result can be a person in office that reflects none of what they stand for."

Doesn't that usually happen no matter who you vote for?

I don't think so, I think that's a pretty narrow view, and not accurate. As far as politics go, you got your independents, you got your republicans, your greens, your democrats, your libertarians, then as far as demographics go, you got your rich, your sorta-rich, your sorta-poor, your flat-broke, your ethnic groups, and people that don't count themselves as part of anything. All one big happy family! Sort of...we try to be, on Tuesdays, anyway...
