Symptoms of a vaginal yeast infection include itching and burning in the vagina and around the vulva, a white vaginal discharge that may look like cottage cheese, pain during sexual intercourse, and swelling of the vulva. The discharge smells like yeast. If you have never had one before, then you need to see your doctor for a proper diagnosis, before buying any type of over the counter medication.

Yeast infections are an ordinary occurrence in women of childbearing age. More often than not, small amounts of yeast organisms are found in a healthy vagina. But if an excessive amount grows due to an imbalance of normal vaginal microorganisms, a yeast infection, or vaginal candidiasis, occurs. It is commonly associated with antibiotic or steroid use, pregnancy, diabetes, immune system-impairing illnesses or staying hot and sweaty for long periods of time.
What's more, irritation caused by frequent douching, tight clothing or the use of strong soaps or perfumed feminine hygiene products may contribute to vaginal irritation or infection. Yeast infections are not sexually transmitted. But some doctors think that treating a sexual partner may help prevent chronic infections. Though severe discomfort (pain and itch) can result, yeast infections rarely cause serious problems.
