Besides your Passport, money and other basic clothing, you practically don't require anything else to carry/ load yourself.

India is such a place where you can have whole variety of things to suit your budget and requirements. Sincerely speaking, come and enjoy wearing Indian huge variety of clothing / outfits as per the local flavours and styles in each of its region.

Food is awesome here. Just indicate your level of spices and cooking oil to the cook, you have the most sumptuous dishes with a desire to pack and take them away with you!!

Health and Medical: Just take care of the water you drink during your visit. Take sealed bottled water to drink. Otherwise for any eventualities, you can have best of the medical care and medicines available for sure.

Make sure to have your visit planned very well, including domestic traveling and stay, to avoid any last minutes chances and disappointments.

If you have friends or known in India, don't hesitate to seek guidance from them. Rest in all major towns and tourists places, Tourists Police is there to help you. for convenience and ready reference, have local maps handy - these can be downloaded from net anytime.

Take care of your valuables/money etc as you do in your country when you tour.

Have a good time! For any specific question, you are welcome to get back.

Your question is lil bit confusing. Are you going out of India or going out of some other country to India. However since you are asking from those with exp in India so take that you are planning to go to India.

Shots: You need to take yellow fever shots if you are passing through any yellow fever zone country (mostly african countries)

Visa & Passport: U.S. citizens require a passport and visa to enter and exit India for any purpose. Visitors, including those on official U.S. government business, must obtain visas at an Indian Embassy or Consulate abroad prior to entering the country, as there are no provisions for visas upon arrival. Those arriving without a visa are subject to immediate deportation.

Apart from all these - be vigilant as there are all kind of people in India (considering more than one billion populations).

Do write for any specific informations or for a particular area where you are travelling.

Definatly need to get shots and im pretty sure certain parts of India have malaria so look into getting meds for that. Also if you go to your DR. and tell them that you are leaving they will sometimes will prescribe a general antibiotic just incase. Also be sure to take plenty of your own meds (pepto is a good one to keep on hand as is neosporin)
You will definatly need a passsport , depending on what country your from, a Visa to enter the state those need to be obtained in advance. Depending on your country you get them from government agencies or the embassy.
For india i recomend a travel book it can get rough depending on where you go. the lonley planet has great books with places to go, eat, see and sleep... plus a lot more of the information you will most likley need.

to get a passport you need some ADIT pictures and your birth certificate, driver's liscence and other forms of I.D. its around 100 dollars. before you leave, it will be helpful to know as much as you can about the country you are visiting... the place itself, the people and the culture so that you could prevent yourself from offending the locals and so as not to appear ignorant. i heard that cows are very sacred to most hindis so i'd refrain from talking about slaughtering and making a stew out of one if i were you!jk goodluck on your trip!

p.s. you might wanna bring some medicines like antihistamine or tylenol... they allow it in the airport, and it might be very helpful.
