It's good to see parents monitoring their children's web usage. You get a thumbs up for that! As for the website PureVolume, the website consists of smaller bands and independent groups that are mainly of the punk/alternative genre. In other words it is similar to myspace in that if your daughter formed a band and wanted to promote it, PureVolume provides a great place to do it. It's voluntary on the band's part. If you take a look at a particular band's PV page, you'll notice right away that only a few tracks are availabe from the band's CD. That way it gives a healthy morsel of music sampling for fans to taste in order to encourage them to buy the complete album. A great form of advertising. There are also a few larger bands on there, but I'm sure they had to clear it with management in order to release tracks this way.
If you are still a bit concerned with all the negative media coverage regarding MP3's, you can always encourage her to go to a pay website. Go to the we website of IFPI (International Federation of Phonogram and Videogram Producers) or RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) to find endorsed websites for downloading MP3s. Dont' take our word for it.

The truth on download, as you may or may not now...is downloading music off of the internet for free, (besides band pages) is illegal. I have visited the PV sight a few times…and have made a conclusion. If you pay for the music, say….9.95 for 12 songs that is legal. Also you should check out the terms of use an privacy policy to make sure they give a percent of the money to the artist. But if it is free to download….LEAVE….because the CIA will be at your house within 20 min of clicking download. I recommend using lime Wire for downloading, because the law is VERY shady around file sharing….so it should be legal. I also recommend using itunes. They are on of the best and cheapest around.

Thank you for asking a question about the confusing and controversial issues of legal music on the Internet. I was thinking to reply "Give the 10 points to hivoltgfly" until I read her last remark about allofmp3. The RIAA, and even the EFF, think that it is not legal, if you do not live inside Rusia. Search my other answers, if you want to learn more about it.
Read http://baseportal.com/baseportal/goodsounds/howto and read a bit about the Creative Commons license, to learn more about free and legal music on the net. Feel free to ask again, if you have more questions.

definately- i use it all the time. the artest chooses which songs you are able to download, so it is very much legal. the band's site is usually run by the band itself. the only downside is that not all the artest's songs are available.
