I am looking to start my own business, and would like to have a website that people can order items...and see what is available. It is going to be crafts of all kinds and I am wondering if I need some kind of permit or license to do this. If you know anything please let me know...Thank you very much!

First of all, to make a that kind of specific web site, you need a web programmer&designer first. Because, you require a server-based website with a database. Secondly, you need to buy a domain name and a host to put your files and to publish them in the web. Thirdly, to sell your products from the web and for the credit card security, you need to buy a SSL certificate.

You need a business license to sell, and a sellers permit to start a business.

For a website, you don't need anything special, just build it and use it.

You can get Front Page 2000 cheap, get a cheap hosting plan with linux servers.

For a good free shopping cart, you can get it at
http://www.nopdesign.com/free.html

it works great.

You don't have to have front page, or any of the expensive software, but front page is easy to use and the old one (2000) is cheap.

Don't get front page 98, it's too old.

For hosting, www.hostforweb.com is good or www.hostgator.com is good, and it's not to expensive. $10 per month and you get plenty of bandwidth and space.

If you really don't know anything about this at all, then you might want to just go for yahoo hosting and their store plan, and build a website using their online software, but I think you will pay more.

Check with your ISP for web-hosting packages that they may offer for a nominal fee. Most offer "personal web space" up to 10 MB for you to use for non-business stuff.

To create the page, I use a program called "Web Easy Professional" that I found at Target. This program doesn't require you to have any HTML knowledge - a series of wizards guide you through setting up the page and it generates the HTML code for you. It also comes with a FTP utility for uploading the page to the hosting server.

the most easiest way to do this is by using a CMS (content management system) software. There's alot available on the net (freeware / shareware). It's just like forum software. U only need to install it on your webhosting service (the webhosting must support MySQL Database and PHP) and you're finish creating a site without coding. (although basic computer knowledge is necessary)

and if u want to add something to your site (like add-on, themes, etc) known as mod or hack, u can download it again from the net

for example just go to this site :

etc

No license, no permit, you probably have a certain amount of free web space with your isp. Check it out. After that its a matter of learning html....there are lots of web authoring programs out there that make it easy! I use ixla web easy. When you get going you might want a tax number.

You need a host and notepad. And, of course, knowledge of HTML, XML, XHTML, PHP, VBscript for .asp's... If you are good you'll know all of them (like me :) ) You may also want a domain name if you don't want people to have to type in http://128.13.45.1/index.phtml to get to your homepage. The host program you'll need varies with the scripting language, Apache for PHP, the default Windows Host for VBscript ASP's... it's a bit complicated.

To correct some of you, you don't need an SSL certificate unless you need a SSL-type secure host, as with sites that require you to "log in." You also don't need FrontPage or anything like that. I make all my websites in Photoshop for graphics and Notepad for coding. Plus, you can host a website on any computer, not just with your ISP. My ISP doesn't host any of my sites, I prefer the control of using a personally owned computer to host them.
