Seriously, things have changed since my babysitting days. I just read about a woman who is facing charges because she left her 12 year old in charge of her other 4 children while she went to look for work. Well, the house caught fire, so that wasn't too cool, but I recall I was already getting paid to babysit for people at the age of 12. What's the real deal?

I know what you mean. I remember babysitting too. I talked to a local police officer and he told me that its up to the parents when they think that their kids are ready. However, if anything happens ie: fire, attempted kidnapping.. then they can press charges on the parents for leaving the child. It doesn't make any sense except that everyone is worried about getting sued. Just call your local police dept. and see what they say on the limit.

Kids get there babysitting certificate at 12 in Canada. I babysat at age 11 and 3 kids. I would not let a 11 year old look after my kids. I am nervous having a 13 year old doing it.

Where I'm at the legal age is 12, but I won't allow my girls to babysit until they're 14.

In my city (I'm a cop) there is no legal age. As long as the child in charge knows what to do in case of emergencies and has all the important numbers and can reach an adult via phone if necessary. Of course you can't leave the child there to watch a ton of children though.
So in my city, it's a case by case basis.

anymore it is 15 or 16 yrs old or older to be baby sitting. children and youth are quite picky anymore because too many things have happened and they have gotten more strict. I baby sat when I was 13 and 14 as well but these days it is a big no no . I am in Pennsylvania

the big deal is the kid was 12 and in charge of 4 other kids. the lady probably wouldn't have gotten in trouble if there was only 1 kid to babysit.

I'm not sure of the legal age' but I don't think you should go by that anyway. I know teenage girls who are 16 and act like they are 12 then others who are 12 that act 16. I think it should depend on the individual.
