Well, though it's often used to create that effect, it isn't REALLY! (though hehe, with my Mum, i was beginning to think it is) Actually she says that she couldn't decide what to name me and used that as a second name... also, she wanted to give me my first name, but still name me after her mother (as a sign of respect) and so that's how I got my middle name. To be fair, some of my friends call me by my middle name just to tease me and a teacher couldn't pronounce my first name, so he called me by my middle name, so i guess nope... children don't only have middle names so that they know staight away when they've done something wrong.

I have no middle name. I made them up all the time.

I think they are useful for identity purposes. There might be 1 million John Smiths, but perhaps only 1,000 John Bancroft Smiths, and maybe only 2, John Joojoo Smith.

LOL!!! That is a good sumation of what its for, isnt it? :)

But, its basically just to differentiate individuals, in case there are more John Smiths running around, then you can tell them by thier middle names if its the right ones or not.

I wish you well..

Oh How True! That middle name really does come in handy when I want to let my sons know just how upset I am. They know they're really, really in trouble when I call them Mr. Nicholson.
