They screwed us into paying taxes when there are 3 examples at work right that prove taxes are NOT needed we could be PAID instead. www.earthrights/docs/oilrent that's oilrent on the end. Alaska uses just 1 commodity to pay not tax their residents. I know it' oil. Every other state has more commodities and in larger quanities, oil IS just a commodity. Like all the farm products, ores, minerals ect. the list is huge. So what your states excuse for not paying you. Why with all the feds resources( 2 other nations pay there citizens) can't they do 50 times better than Alaska? So they tax us for no good reason, they run up the debt, waste money everywhere, give our money to foreigners that hate us, wage wars and we have to pay to the rebuild counrty afterwards, and vote themselves raises for this? If you owned a company that worked like this, would'nt you fire ALL the management and hire a whole new management staff? So why don't we vote out ALL the DEMS and REPS and never vote DEM or REP again. Then vote for anyone else thats not a DEM or REP? Think they might get the hint?

Since lawmakers, whether local, state or federal, write the laws under which all government employees are paid, lawmakers, by definition are in control of their salaries. Even if the procedure refers the decision whether to have a raise to another "independent" entity, the mere fact that the procedure was set up by the legislature, and any recommendation to increase salaries has to be voted on by the legislature, means the decision stays with the lawmakers.
Since there is a perceived agreement that legislative salaries should in some manner be pegged to comparative work, salaries are going to go up.
If legislative salaries could not go up, just think what sort of Congress we'd have if the salary was still $20 per month. Congress would be full of the very rich and the very bribed.

Yes, but have you read the 27th Amendment to the Constitution: "No law, varying the compensation for the services of the Senators and Representatives, shall take effect, until an election of Representatives shall have intervened."
So, yes, they can vote for a raise. But it doesn't take effect until the country has had a chance to vote for all the Representatives and one-third of the Senators. Granted, incumbents tend to win, and most people don't care about them stuffing their pockets. But it allows for at least some procedural protection.

It is a common thing for Congress to vote them self a raise
My thoughts are that we deserve the people we elect -
We need to vote responsibly to get people that act responsibly

This has happened for decades. More recently they chose to set up automatic raises so they don't have to vote themselves one.
