I think it dates back awhile. People name them so that they can remember the hurricanes. Every year they come up with a list of names in Alphabetical order. Let's say the first names on the list are Andrea, Brian and Devin. (The list is much bigger than that) The first hurricane of the season is named Andrea. The second is named Brian and the third Devin. Now let's Say that Hurricane Devin is category 5 and tears up Texas leaving Texas as a ruin. The name Devin will never be used again because of the superstition that The second Hurricane Devin will be just as bad or worse than the first hurricane devin.

It's easier for people to keep track of named storms rather than numbered or lettered ones. You would have Hurricane "A" every year, so if you were discussing Hurricane "A" with other people, how would they know which Hurricane "A" it was? There will never be another Hurricane named Katrina or Andrew (they retire the names of the really bad ones), so if you say "Katrina" (or "Andrew")everyone knows which storm you mean.

How in the world would you be able to discuss and gather information about a specific hurricane without an identification marker? I think that it is a great idea. Hopefully, not many hurricanes are forthcoming because frankly I don't want to hear that people are experiencing disaster and trauma. Wherever you are, remember this, "If God be for us, who can be against us?" - Romans 8:31. Peace and God Bless.

Hurricanes are life changing events on a regional or national scale. It would be inefficient to refer to them as things like "the second category 3 hurricane of 2005" wouldn't it? But if anyone says the names Rita, Katrina, Audrey, or Andrew, you know exactly what they're talking about.

Maybe so you don't have to say like that hurricane was big or the hurricane back in 1995 was huge they just want you to call it a name to make it easier to talk about a hurricane I think.

It's so they can be identified. Hurricanes can happen during the same time and it's difficult to remember which hurricane is which so naming them makes life easier.

So they can remember that specific hurricane. So others know what one you are talking about. Thats why i think they name hurricanes.

Easier to remember if given a name. If they are given numbers or just use the date it is more confusing.
That is why when a hurricane becomes a major one that name is retired.

You've got to name a hurricane or how else would you differentiate between different storms?
