no u dont need to have a high definition t.v to play the xbox 360. Recently my niece brought her boyfriend an xbox 360 & 2 games for his 18th birthday, but it wouldnt play a certain game, the only difference between the game it wouldnt play and the other game was that 1 said about HDTV across the box! I must have read thru every website that had anything to do with the xbox 360...till eventually i found 1 that said HDTV only enhanced picture/sound quality and that quite a large number of the consoles that were released & recalled just before Xmas, hadnt been returned-thats when it suddenly twigged in my tiny little brain that it was a faulty console and nothing to do with HDTV!!

No the HDtv is optional but you won't have the same visual experience without one.
