depending on how it is used ie, "you are ghetto" loud or obnoxious. " you look ghetto" can mean hoochie or street in the way you are dressed thugged out or gangsta if you're a guy. or where a person is from usually classified as a lower class minority area with high foot traffic (lots of people coming and going), you see the police in and out of these areas alot, and the area has signs boasting drug free community (this is usually where you find the most drug users and / or sellers). It is not a compliment to be called ghetto. (just so you know) if it were there wouldn't be so many people telling stories or so many rappers saying how they made it from the ghetto slingin dope and shooting people to how they are now ridin big with all these cribs and cars on '24's or '26's.

A ghetto is an area where people from a specific racial or ethnic background or united in a given culture or religion live as a group, voluntarily or involuntarily, in milder or stricter seclusion. The word historically referred specifically to the Venetian Ghetto in Venice, where Jews were required to live; it derives from the Venetian gheto (slag from Latin GLĬTTU[M] cfr. Italian ghetta (slags)), and referred to the area of the Cannaregio sestiere, the site selected for the Ghetto Nuovo where an iron foundry cooled the slags (campo gheto). It was later applied to neighborhoods in other cities where Jews were required to live. The corresponding German term was Judengasse; in Moroccan Arabic ghettos were called mellah. The term now commonly labels any poverty-stricken urban area

A ghetto is a place , which is usually poor and where people of the same race, creed or type congregate or are placed by society or a power ( government ). For example hitler created a ghetto by using Warsaw ( Poland ) in the second world war to imprison Jewish peolple for the purposes of control and eventual murder and extermination.

It used to mean a poor part of town. Now it's a slang word that is way overused. People are using it for everything, like "The way she cooked that meat was so ghetto." "The way she does her hair is so ghetto." It's just a trendy word, and I'm tired of it.

The word "ghetto" means any area that contains a high concentration of a single ethnic group.
It doesn't necessarily have be low-income or blighted, but in more recent years that's what it's come to mean.
