Absolutely and I feel certain that in a few years it will be. You see, internet IS free. It is access to it that we are charged for. At the moment the cost of broadband is prohibitive to many people in particular people from less rich countries. Make access free and the interested parties will have literally billions more surfers. I feel this way... WHY SHOULD I HAVE TO PAY TO ACCESS A WEBSITE THAT A FRIEND OF MINE HAS CREATED AND WHO DOES NOT CHARGE ME ANYTING TO VIEW IT ?

First we need to make the word "internet" clear. When we say internet, we are actually talking about a set of standards, protocols and rules that allow for the "seamless" connectivity of a lot of individual networks and the interchange of informtion between these systems.

The physical network (that we call the INTERNET) is not free bacause every piece of the physical plant cost money to build and maintain. It is paid for through access rights, marketing and the sale of services (i.e. email, storage, hosting, etc.). When you sign up for service from your ISP, then you are paying for access to the internet.

There is no formal charge for the internet but there is a charge for using it as there should be because it takes a lot of electricity, and people to keep it running.

Now if you are referring to a government TAX or some other plan to have you "PAY" for internet access, then that may border on "DOUBLE CHARGES" for the same thing, just to line the pockets of some other large groups that have a stake.

Yes, it should remain free, because individuals that need to do a lot of research is able to do so, just as a library. Yet, there are many people that make money on the Internet, so it works well for everyone.

The Internet is free. It's your ISP that is not free and should not be free. Some Internet services are free and some are not. It is impossible to force businesses to provide services for free. That would never work. They have expenses and are in it for profit. If everything were free, nobody would work, and then there would be nothing to give/get for free. The reason our economy works is because it is a trade of goods and services.

Internet is already free.

ISP isnt free....ISP is the internet service provider that lets us connect to the internet.

But internet is free. As soon as we get connected, we can surf the web and get on yahoo.com or google.com and look up any information our heart desires. All information is free. If youre talking about ordering online, then thats not the internet. Thats just a business website that is on the internet.

Nope. Limited bandwidth. I don't need my connection slowed down because billions more people are online because it's free.

I drive on the toll roads instead of the free highways because there's less traffic, and I's like to keep paying for my internet access for the same reason.

No one owns the internet. the internet is just a large network essentially. So how could you charge for it? You have to pay for some sites and those are what you pay for not the "internet"

NOTHING is free. If anything, food and water should be free way before the internet.

No..companies need to make money. If you need free internet, you can go the public library or other places. ( but even they have to pay for it)
