With my episiotomy I tore in the inside and then the Dr cut me on the outside to help with delivery. I was just wondering how long it will take for it not to hurt when having sex.

First of all, professional mother, that isn't true. I've been to a many number of deliveries where women would have torn all the way through their rectums if it wasn't for an episiotomy. Refusing an episiotomy when you need one is not the safest thing to do. Doctors now days will not do episiotomies unless they think it's necessary. And it's much easier to stitch an epsiotomy then it is a tear. Trust me on that. Done both and the episiotomy is much easier, and usually heals faster too.

As far as pain with sex, sometimes it can take a while. I had pain with my first for almost a year at my episiotomy site. I would suggest using lubrication and stay away from positions that put pressure on that area. If you are having severe pain, talk to your doctor about it.

I hate to say it... If you're lucky, by 6-8 weeks it will be healed; most women *do* recover in that time period. But for some women, it takes years or never gets better. Having another baby (and *refusing* an episiotomy!!) may help if the pain continues beyond a couple of months. But there are no guarantees.

Doctors prefer to do an episiotomy than "let you tear" even though a tear is almost never as severe as a cut and even though tears heal better (there's actually research on this subject). If you think about it--it makes sense. Take a piece of paper and cut it with one straight cut; put it back together. You'll never get it *quite* right. But if you tear it, you have "landmarks" that help you fit it back exactly the way it started.

Have you already had your 6 week check up?? If so it can take up to several months for it not to hurt or be tender anymore. I had an episiotomy with my first and it took about 4 months before it was healed completely. You have to remember they cut nerves when they did it and it takes a little while for them to grow back together and heal. Just be patient it will go away.

Well, I think six weeks is the standard wait time after delivery. I've heard that it could take a little longer if you had an episitomy. I'm not sure because I didn't have one. But, I think it depends on your comfort level. Talk to your doctor if you aren't sure.

usually 6-8 weeks until you are allowed to have sex, but i would make sure you try other things before actual penetration and make sure you use lubrication as things are a little different for the first few months after you deliver.

i had one with my first baby and it took a little less than a week from when the stitches were gone. painful sex can be a result of a lot of things you may want to ask your ob/gyn.
