Only if it was possible, necessary and worthwhile.
I'll give examples of all three.
I wouldn't climb a cliff. What good is another body on the rocks below? (I'm not a rockclimber. D'oh!)
I'm the only solution or help possible, and the situation is otherwise hopeless. I, like any sane person, tend to want to minimize risk to myself. So, if there's a chance the current will change and wash you back to shore, I'd rather stay safe and dry and be available to start CPR
I wouldn't piss on Dick Cheney if his *** was on fire.
LOL, sorry, there are just way too many people taking themselves way too serious here.

Yes, I would, depending on the situation. Say a boat was sinking. The life rafts were almost full. I have five children who are safe in a raft and there's only room for one more person. Only me and one other person are left. Do I get on the raft and leave the other person to die, or do I let the other person on the raft so he may live, but leave five children without a mother?
So, see, it would depend on the situation. In that case, my five children (which I do not have btw!) would, by instinct, come first. I couldn't abandon them.

Martin Luther King Jr. said "If you don't have anything that you would die for, you aren't fit to live." and Jesus Christ said, "Greater love hath no man than this, that he lay down his life for his friends." If you love your neighbor as yourself, there should be no strangers and you should show this same love to all mankind. Some situations I may fail but I would like to believe that I would put myself and my safety last, even for a total stranger if his life was in jeopardy.

I think we all have that gut instinct at the time and we just do what we need to do depending on the situation. Sometimes there's just no time to think and we can only react

I think I would. It depends on the situation. If I know the person needs help immediately I'll do whatever I can.

I won't know for sure until I'm faced with the situation (hoping that doesn't happen) but I believe I would in any case.

That depends, in the heat of the moment you can't really say what you would or wouldn't do. esp. if a child's life was in danger.

Ablolutely; it would be better to risk mine than to stand there and watch someone die.
