They charged me for time past when I cancelled. Did you receive a cancellation note in the mail from them? I happened to receive one from them and called their customer service line and complained, using the date on the letter and the date of the charges taken from my bank account to prove they were charging for something that I hadn't used in a month They re-deposited the money.

Cancellation is always by phone. When you cancel your account, the customer service agent gives you a confirmation number for the transaction. The number serves as proof that you canceled the service at a certain date. If you did not receive or lost the number then it is going to take you a long time to resolve the issue with AOL. PC World rated AOL as the worsest product for the year 2006.

I had a lot of trouble cancelling my AOL account. You can try and contest it with your bank. Dealing with AOL is horrible. If you cancel it and than log on the next day, it automatically starts back up like you never cancelled it.
