I do because it allows me to fully see what the other side thinks. It's a good discussion tactic, because it allows you to know what the other side's points are going to be, so that you can strengthen your own point of view.

yes b/c you can bring up any point of view or argument with impunity. in other words, playing devil's advocate allows you to be intellectual and ask any question without hurting anyone's feelings or taking sides. you'd actually be helping someone's dilemma or problem by presenting every facet of the situation.

It really helps if you're in an environment that's hostile towards your opinion. You can use that tactic to get your point across without owning up to the fact that it's your opinion! And not to cop out either, it's a good way to get a message across, where some poeple might get defensive if they thought it was coming straight from you
