We are going to the (Mexico) border next week to go look around and go shopping. What would be some good advice (for me) when I am in Mexico?

You don't mention your age, but if you are thinking of "celebrating," limit your alcohol consumption as you will be an easy mark if you are drunk. Take only the cash and identification you need. You do NOT want to carry large amounts of cash or credit cards. Know what can be taken back into the United States and be aware of the amount of time it may take to cross the border (you don't mention if you are driving, walking, or taking a bus.) If you are shopping for certain items, check out their usual prices before you go... also know the conversion between pesos and dollars and if you exhange currency double-check to make sure you are getting a reasonable rate.

Not sure where you are going -- the US/Mexican border is fairly long and there are a number of cities along it. You're actually better to go past the border to a larger city. Shopping is better, the city is safer and cleaner.
In general if you wander around the border towns, stay on the main drag, don't flash wads of money and lots of jewelry. Most Mexicans are very friendly and very honest, but it's like any other country, where a few bad apples can give the whole place a bad name.

I agree ... get beyond the border towns if you can. Thats easier to do in Baja

don't carry all your cash in one spot. also make sure you have the number to the credit cards in case your wallet is lost or stolen. vacation sucks if you this happens but even more if you spend half your vacation time hunting for phone numbers, account numbers and canceling all of them
