For a standard 4m x 4m kitchen in the UK you should be looking to spend around £3-5,000 on units and then an extra £3,000 or so on appliances (fridge, dishwasher, cooker, sink/taps). Worktops will range from £100 for a standard laminated system up to £3,000+ for top of the range granite or corian. The price quoted includes fitting. Obviously you can spend up to £50,000 on a high-end kitchen, but about £5-10,000 is a standard expenditure.

We had someone from a professional company have a look at our kitchen. We were quoted £10,000 (we only need cupboards and appliances for a 10x5 space though!) If we buy the kitchen cupboards/worktop, etc, ourselves and call in a kitchen fitter, it'll only be about £2500. You can fit your own kitchen, but by law electrics and plumbing have to be done professionally.

It depends how big and which company you use and how much material is needed, my Mum's saving for a new kitchen, she needs about £3000, but that's only a very small kitchen.
