It is atrocious to jail people without a trial, a lawyer or even one phone call; how can the US say that they are a "free" country?
I am completely fine with locking up criminals but there has to be a process and evidence or the US just becomes a dictatorship.

An individual who is in an area of combat, armed, without wearing a distinctive mark identifying him/her as a combatant may, under the laws of war be shot on sight. However once they are picked up an captured they should be subjected to the same rights that we would expect any military prisoner to have. This includes a fair determination of if they were indeed a combatant. How hard would it have been to give those men a trial ether civil or military. I just do not understand why we left ourselves open to what was obviously going to become an international black eye. Even without the human rights issue it is terrible propaganda for us and results in more recruits for our opponents.

These are prisoners of war, and have a better life in Gitmo than they did in their country - they get three healthy meals a day, time for their prayers and Koranic studies, and exercise. They ARE guilty of fighting out of uniform - in the language of the Geneva Convention, they are spies and could actually be shot out of hand because of that. Personally, I think room and board at the taxpayers' expense is more than just the usual "mercy" when a death sentence could have been rendered.

Unfortunately, most of us seem to have a "guilty by association" view, basically saying that since these people were around the Taliban (and even look like them!), they are with them. Never mind that some are as young as 14, they're brown and Muslim and lived in the Afghan country, so they must be bad.
My opinion : charge them, give them a FAIR (as in, unbiased jury, access to lawyers, etc.) trial, and if they're innocent, deport them to where they were before. Some of them are undoubtedly fighters who want to destroy America, but most are probably people who were there at the wrong place, wrong time.

No, I am conservative but I think they need a trial and should have had one long ago. Right now it is going through our court system whether they can be tried by military tribunal or need to be tried in civil courts. Bush says that is what they are waiting for before starting trials again. (They had started them in military tribunals but the defense was insisting on a civil court.)
That is no excuse for all the time that passed up to that point, though. I believe a large percentage will end up being guilty. However, I think each individual deserves due process, or who are we?

hi
all i see in this world are gay &les, rights and meely mouth liberals,
might be adivsable to read, what these people are fighting for?
and why its you can vote for who you want to, but they, just kill its there way of voting, and you seem to unhold there rights, seems very strange ,how one can comment on events in the world without the whole facts.war is the only thing man understands,we havent had a world war for over 60 years,so read your history and then i think you may have earned the right to comment, and if these people are suicide bombers, why worry if the kill themselves in prison, cos thats what they do,thats why they are sucide bombers, all that has changed in this worlds history is the weapons of war

The Guantanamo "camp" stunk from day one. They only took them there to avoid our own laws. Let them face their accusers. That used to be an important legal principal. We gave Nazi war criminals a trial.

They killed themselves Sam, and if you have information clearing them from crimes or terrorists attacks feel free to contact your government with it. Ohh by the way petition your country to take a few of these miscreants I am sure they would be comfy in your neighborhood. And have a nice day :D

we have a gov't that makes those decisions and those in gov't are put there thru voting. If people don't like the results then people should become more involved in the political issues writing congress and absolutely VOTING when the time comes.

Staggering isn't it? Can you imagine if these were American Prisoners held on Trumped up allegations? (not even charges!) International Law & the Geneva Convention have been abandoned and we should all be appalled.
