If the rings aren't sentimental, I would sell them! Then you could put that money towards the cost of starting over.

No matter how the divorce ended the ex-spouse will always be part of your history, painful maybe but still a part of it. What I would suggest is remounting the stone in another setting. It would be new and fresh like your future. However, if your financial situation is in question you can't eat or sleep under a diamond. Get the stone appraised and sell it to the highest bidder.

I think the woman should give it back to her ex-husband. I think the man should pawn it or eBay it or something after he gets it back. Engagement rings are not something that should be recycled by the same man.
