The exaust lever should be closed. The exaust lever is used to bring in air from the outside... and if your cooling im assuming it HOT air it would be drawing in.
That lever works in the same way as your cars AC where you can have the fan on and the AC "cooling" part of the unit off, so that it just draws in fresh air. You could use this feature at night to bring in the cold air outside. To just draw in the outside air, you will want the vent open and the the selector set to FAN ONLY.
But during normal cooling leave the vent closed or it will be drawing in warm air from the outside.

closed, so it will recirculate the air in the room if not it would be pulling in hot air from outside, when cooling. Believe it or not air conditioners don't add cool to the room they remove heat.It soaks it up then blows it out side. Heat=presence of energy. Cold=void,No energy. Thats why when you go outside and feel the air blowing there it's hot.

either, it's preference, when open it cools the fresh outside air then blows it inside. When closed it recycles the inside air which makes it cooler faster but makes the air stagnant.
