need some guidance dont want it to fall on my kids..... i will be putting a 1x 2 underneath it but curious as to how many wood brackets to use (i really dont want to use metal brackets)...

i would go every other stud ( 32") the shelf being made of pine will tend to sag and twist. pine is bad for this. plus the weight of just the shelf itself will need closer support. also u may decide to add something a bit heaver than stuffed animals down the road.

4' on center will be more than enough, and will line up with the wall studs. You'll only need 3 if you start 18" in from the ends , or 4 if you start 6" in from the ends. 4 might look better and stronger if you dont hit studs and need to use plastic anchors.
